A Moral Courage Conversation

With my friend Sara (from Paris) I went to "The Moral Courage Conversations with Irshad Manji: Salman Rushdie" at the 92st Y the other night. It's a lecture series that is organized by Steinhardt (the school of culture, education, and human development at NYU). Salman was great - very well spoken, intelligent, and witty, but Irshad was unfortunately a little annoying. She kept saying things like, "As I pointed out in my book..." or would interject in the middle of something Salman was saying to supply him with a word. Hopefully, as the series goes on, she will become a better interviewer. I can't remember specifically all that was said, as it happened like 3 weeks ago (sorry!), but it was interesting and Salman talked more about politics and moral issues than about his writing. Afterwords though, he held a signing and I brought my book and got it signed, so that worked out better than my last book signing with David Sedaris. I told him that Dad had bought his book of essays for me to help me with writing my own college essay and that it must have worked, because I got accepted to NYU! He said he was glad to have helped...

I'm kind of upset. daaaammmmit. I read a book of his called Midnight's Children for a class two semesters ago and actually I had a few bones to pick, but it was still really good and it would have been awesome to meet him. I wonder if my friend Praveen went? he liked the book even more than I did.
